Kuumba Youth Music: Fine Tuned For The Future
Music has long been regarded as the language of the black community, a mode of expression through which generations have shared stories. At the heart of every modern day genre of music, from rap to rock, the influence of the black experience is evident.
Classical music, however, has continued to appear as an exclusive, class-bound ceiling, and to many, elitist entertainment. Dispelling the myth that young black people do not enjoy classical music is a programme called Kuumba.
Through the release of a short film, both the parents and the young musicians, many who began playing from as young as 6 years old, have shared their musical journeys in the hope of encouraging others to get involved.
